"making this trip is the first thing on my bucket list"
Everyone talks about bucket lists … but, how many of us have one? You know, an actual list? As the definition above explains – it is a list of things you hope to accomplish in your lifetime. That’s what I call a long-term plan. Long term planning is important of course, but I personally like to operate in the YOLO (You Only Live Once) approach when it comes to these lists. So, last year I started to a BIRTHDAY BUCKET LIST! How is that different than a “regular” bucket list? Well, it is more immediate. It is a list of things for that year, not a lifetime (although of course there is crossover on both lists!). Think of it as a fresh start for your new year!
The cool thing about the Birthday Bucket List is that you are motivated to try new things – you can’t say you are bored or in a rut because you always have your list to refer to for new, fun ideas. That was part of my motivation in creating the list to begin with – to be inspired to break routine; to try things I have been saying I wanted to do, but just didn’t get around to. And, guess what?! It worked! Not only did I start to do and try new things … one, of the best and most surprising results was that my friends and family wanted to “sign up” to do things with me! How great is that?!
Some of the things on my birthday bucket list from this year – I have started and/ or completed all of these (I mean, who doesn’t like to cross things off a list, right?!)
Start a blog (you are reading one of my blogs!)
Visit a new country (I went to Greece! This one was on my life bucket list too!)
Go on at least 3 road trips - have done 3 and going on 4th soon
Revisit childhood memories – I did this with my daughter
Start a book club – one of my FAVORITE ones – done and still going strong!
Go to the opera – one of the BEST experiences – did this with 4 of my favorite people at the NYC Metropolitan Opera including tea at the Plaza – amazing lifetime memory!
Send a message in a bottle – did this with my friend Lenore … we also did a tour of the covered bridges in our area – I think we saw 6 or 7 of them!
Watch all Best Picture Oscar winning movies … ongoing
Go whitewater rafting – did this in Idaho with my family and extended family – EPIC fun on the Salmon River
Here are some other things on my list that I have NOT done yet, but still working on it (and may transfer over to next year’s list)!
Take a cooking class
Buy a kayak
Learn how to meditate
Print more photos and display in my home
Join a hiking group
Sleep outside in a tree house or Yurt
Go to a film festival
Read 5 “classic” books
Learn how to play chess
Prepare and go on a romantic picnic
My birthday is coming up in less than a month and it will be one year since I created my first birthday bucket list (I will definitely be doing another one!). I think it was a huge success. I found myself referring to it often and making plans inspired by ideas on my list. Best of all, this list was also part of my inspiration for creating Mission EmpowHER. When Elaine and I were brainstorming ways to collaborate – my birthday bucket list kept coming up. It was so amazing the way people responded to the list and wanted to participate in the activities! We realized that we are all looking for ways to connect with each other and to break out of the “box” of our routines --- Mission EmpowHER will make that so much easier (and more fun!) than ever.
I challenge you to make a birthday bucket list this year – think of it as a fresh start and what better way to begin your “new” year than with creating a road map to a better, more fulfilled YOU!
